At the time Chris Raymond, editor of The Director, wrote the article, A Beacon Amidst a Sudden Storm, the vicious attacks upon the United States was less than a week old. The article includes a description of the immediate reaction from NFDA, its members, and funeral directors across the world; a reprint of a letter of support from National President of the Australian Funeral Directors Association Stephen Parry; a reprint of a letter from NFDA President John Carmon and Acting Executive Director Christine Pepper released the day of the disaster; a description of the newly established NFDA 9-11 Relief Fund, which will be applied toward the enormous expense of the recovery efforts in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania; and a drafted resolution proclaiming November 4, 2001, a National Day of Unity, which NFDA Director of Government Relations John Fitch Jr. presented to Congress.
