The Columbine Tragedy

Part III: The search for understanding and healing in the wake of tragedy

Written by Martha Gaidies

Martha Gaidies, chair of the Mortuary Science Department, Arapahoe Community College, Littleton, CO, watched the television in disbelief as the tragic events unfolded at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her disbelief turned into sadness as she learned that a boy from her church died in the library that day. The next day, her disbelief and sadness turned to horror when she learn that Dylan Klebold, one of the shooters, was the son of a woman she worked with at Arapahoe Community College. In The Columbine Tragedy-Part III: The search for understanding and healing in the wake of tragedy, Gaidies explains her relationship with Sue Klebold and how she helped Klebold make funeral arrangements for her son.
